I videotaped rehearsal on Thursday and as I watched the dancers navigate the work through the camera lens my tasks at hand became clear. The work needs more shape and another layer of diversity. Currently, the sections are about the same length. This creates a metronome type rhythm that feels flat and shallow. To remedy this we are going to extend what we call the “big and sweeping” section. This section contains large full-bodied movement, swift turns and shifts of weight, and big round arm gestures. While it is jammed packed with movement, it provides a break from the tightly knit, tense movement of previous sections. With the extension of “big and sweeping” the audience will be ready for two things; stillness, and a return to the smaller nervous energy of the beginning of the piece.

I also need to rearrange the sections. The beginning is working well, however I need to maintain the energy level it sets for much longer. This poses a few problems. One, dancer stamina. Already the phrases demand a great deal from the dancers, and I don’t want to tire them out in the first fifteen minutes. Two, I don’t want to give everything away at the beginning. Three, this means more movement generation and I already feel like there is a ton of movement. This particular problem is the least challenging of them all, but highlights how different this creative process is from my last work, No Where, in which the vocabulary was quite small but it was arranged in a multitude of ways over 45 minutes.

This is what the order looks like now:
Opening sequence
Slow motion
Cannon of tight and fast snippet
Tight and fast in unison
Broken trio traveling movement
Floor sequence
Trio with the women
Walking
Big and Sweeping
Tight and Fast
Broken Trio
Variation of opening sequence
Slow motion
Variation of opening sequence 2

This is what I am going to try at rehearsal in two weeks:
Opening sequence

Variation of trio with women with male duet counterpoint
Big and sweeping (extended)

I’ll let you know how it works in two weeks! More soon.
